Concernant la traduction du nom Shadowfax, voilà ce qu'écrit Tolkien dans "Nomenclature of The Lord of the Rings" (RC, p. 762-763) :
Tolkien a écrit :Shadowfax. This is an anglicized form of Rohan (= OE) Sceadu-fæx 'having shadow-grey mane (and coat)'. (It does not actually occur in OE.) Since it is not CS it may be retained, though better so in a simplified form of the Rohan name: Scadufax. But since in the text this name has been assimilated to modern E. (= CS), it would be satisfactory to do the same in a Germanic LT, using related elements. Fax 'hair' is now obsolete in E., except in the name Fairfax (no longer understood). It was used in OHG (faks) and MHG (vahs, vachs, etc.), but is, I believe, also now obsolete; but it could be revived in this name, as it is in the E. text: e.g. Schattenvachsl Fax (faks) is still in use in Iceland and Norway for 'mane'; but shadow has no exact equivalents in Scandinavian languages. The Dutch version has Schaduwschicht ('shadow-flash'), Swed. Skuggfaxe.Pour résumer, puisque ce n'est pas un nom en langue commune (Common Speech) à l'origine, Shadowfax doit être conservé (en gras dans le texte) dans les langues autres que germaniques (Germanic LT). Le nom "Gripoil" n'a donc pas lieu d'être.
