C'est vrai que cette expression m'avait aussi interpelé et on la retrouve également dans ce passage du SdA sans que cela ne s'applique aux ents mais bel et bien à cette idée de geants bâtisseurs, passage qui est cité d'ailleurs dans le dernier article que tu proposes - je m'en rends compte en le lisant après coup -, c'est pourquoi je vais le remettre pour tout le monde :
Le même article revient aussi sur la formule du Hobbit concernant les Trolls qui à la lumière du soleil "go back to the stuff of the mountains they are made of" dont parle John D. Rateliff à la page 148 de The History of the Hobbit. En revanche, il ne me semble pas être fait mention d'une autre utilisation dans l'article, même si je n'en ai eu qu'une lecture en diagonale ; à savoir, dans les Contes Perdus, le dernier chapitre du volume II :
Cette fois-ci il n'y est pas question d'une construction impressionante et ancienne que l'on pourrait croire l'oeuvre de géants, ce qui n'est pas sans me rappeler d'ailleurs chez les Grecs les murs de Mycènes dits "cyclopéens" par les Grecs des époques qui ont suivi. Ici il est bel et bien fait état des "os de la bonne terre" dans une image très positive qui s'accorde bien avec les propos prêtés à Sylvebarbe.
