Je suppose qu'il vaut mieux répondre rapidement à une question divine. Si tu ne sais pas, les dieux risquent de choisir pour toi. Donc aucun temps particulier ne leur a été donné pour choisir.
Au contraire, la question est légèrement différente pour Arwen, Elladan et Elrohir, qui ont dû faire leur choix une fois Elrond parti pour Valinor :
"But to the children of Elrond a choice was also appointed: to pass with him from the circles of the world; or if they remained, to become mortal and die in Middle-earth". (SdA, Appendice A, Nùmenor).
Néanmoins, s'il est sûr qu'Arwen a fait un choix, on ne connaît pas celui des jumeaux, ainsi que le dit Tolkien dans la lettre 153 (1954) :
"The end of his sons, Elladan and Elrohir, is not told: they delay their choice, and remain for a while".
